Venus A Dance Dedicated to Love's Body, Rhinebeck, NY 11.14-15.2009

My photographs were featured in a dance performance in Rhinebeck, NY this month!

Choreographer Elaine Colandrea created Venus, A Dance Dedicated to Love's Body, a multimedia dance performance exploring the archetypal journey of a woman's life, and inspired by Boticelli's painting, "The Birth of Venus." Sensuous music, movement, sculpture, and images coaxed and cocooned Venus through her story's arc.

The piece comprised several movements involving unique combinations of dancers, photographs, recorded music, an opera singer, and a violin and viola player. Two movements incorporated my photographs: a healing section in which, through a series of projected photo montages, young Venus awakens through her association with elements of nature, and a second as a series of projected images embedding portions of Boticelli's Venus in images of nature.

Venus was performed at the Rhinebeck Center for Performing Arts, November 14 and 15, 2009.

The photo montage above was created by Maggie Pickford. My photo is the background. The models were photographed by a different artist.

Why take pictures of nature? There is a power in nature unlike anywhere else. In our fast-paced and distracted lives, we often don't take time to be with the healing qualities of nature. Photographs bring it to us. They inspire and awaken our sanctuary and imagination, the wilderness and magic within. Sparked, or perhaps relaxed and renewed, we return to our lives of civilization and culture carrying with us these new places.

Ideas for Moving Forward
Take photos of nature with healing qualities in mind.
Take photos of earth, air, fire, and water.
Look into early nature photographs and their influence. particularly of US west and Congress' decision to create national parks.
Research eastern art, how it relates to 5 element healing, taoism. how nature heals.
